After working with other air knives, when we started to design our own, we first designed better airflow shapes, which in turn made our air knife system more efficient and energy efficient in transporting air. We tried some designs to achieve optimal laminar flow. Laminar flow is a uniform curtain of air with limited "diffusion". Better laminar flow results in better air scrapers or air brooms. (A broom or rubber spatula is a better description, but doesn't sound as interesting as "air knife." We didn't coin the phrase "air knife," we just use it like everyone else.)
